I gave this one a full 350 pages before finally giving it up -- I guess because the first 100 pages were so good, I was sure the book couldn't ultimately be as boring and unengaging as it suddenly seemed to be. Alas, this is just a run-of-the-mill vampire story (and no, that's not a spoiler anymore -- the secret is out, to the point that they basically tell you as much on the back of the paperback version). I can see how you might be fooled into thinking it better than it is by sort of skimming the book, or maybe reading the beginning then skipping to the end, which is what I assume Kate Atkinson, Hilary Mantel, and Tana French did when they were asked to provide their effusive blurbs. That said, with more effort and a better editor, Lauren Owen clearly has the talent to write a great, or at least very good, story. I may well give her another try next time around -- so long as it isn't a sequel.
